Nutrafol Ingredients, One by One

Saw palmetto, curcumin, ashwagandha, tocotrienols, marine collagen, hyaluronic acid and a stack of vitamins: what each is there for, what is known about it alone, and which ones deserve a question to your doctor.

Sources read Sep 22, 2026Not reviewed by a clinician

Nutrafol Men's headline ingredients are saw palmetto, curcumin, Sensoril ashwagandha, a tocotrienol complex, marine collagen peptides and hyaluronic acid, sold together as a blend the company calls Synergen Complex, alongside vitamins and minerals. Most of them have little or no hair-loss research on their own; the evidence that exists is for the whole capsule, from trials tied to the company.

This entry is information only, written from published sources on 22 September 2026 and not reviewed by a clinician. It does not tell you how much of anything to take; your label and your doctor do that.

Why a many-ingredient formula is hard to judge

The direct answer: when a blend of a dozen or more active ingredients beats placebo, the trial cannot say which ingredient did the work, and when it causes a problem, it cannot say which ingredient caused it.

Nutrafol's pitch is that hair thinning has several drivers, including hormones, stress, inflammation and nutrition, so a formula should target several at once. That is a reasonable hypothesis. It also means the product is really a combination of many products, and each ingredient brings its own interactions and cautions. A 2025 case report in JAAD Case Reports counted more than 23 supplements in the label of the Nutrafol hair growth product it examined. Its authors, from NYU's Grossman School of Medicine, warned that the long list and the perceived harmlessness of over-the-counter products make accidental overdose or doubled-up nutrients possible.

The headline botanicals

The direct answer: each botanical has a plausible story and very little direct evidence in people with hair loss when taken alone.

Saw palmetto

Saw palmetto is the ingredient Nutrafol ties to DHT, the hormone behind male pattern hair loss. The NIH's National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health, in a fact sheet updated in April 2025, says a few small studies have tested it for male-pattern hair loss and the evidence is too limited to allow conclusions. It describes side effects as mild and infrequent, such as digestive symptoms, dizziness and headache, and says it may be unsafe during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Our comparison of saw palmetto vs finasteride looks at the one head-to-head study.

Curcumin (from turmeric)

Curcumin is included for inflammation. We found no randomised trial of oral curcumin on its own in people with hair loss when we searched PubMed. Turmeric carries a liver-injury likelihood grade in the US Drug-Induced Liver Injury Network scheme: the 2025 case report ranks it the highest-risk botanical in the Nutrafol label it examined.

Ashwagandha

Nutrafol uses a branded extract, Sensoril, for stress. A 2026 placebo-controlled trial of an ashwagandha root extract measured skin and hair condition in healthy adults, which is not the same question as whether it helps people who are losing hair. The case report also lists ashwagandha among the label's ingredients with a liver-injury grade.

Tocotrienols

Tocotrienols are members of the vitamin E family. A 2010 trial in Malaysia randomised 38 volunteers with hair loss to tocotrienol capsules or placebo for eight months and reported more hairs in the supplement group. It is one small trial, published sixteen years ago, and we found no larger one since.

The marine and structural ingredients

The direct answer: marine collagen and hyaluronic acid are there for hair structure and scalp health, and neither has been tested on its own in people with hair loss in any trial we found.

Marine collagen peptides are derived from fish, which matters for anyone with a fish allergy; read the full label before starting. Collagen appears in several multi-ingredient hair supplements, but the trials we found test blends rather than collagen alone. Hyaluronic acid is better known as a skin-care ingredient; we found no oral hyaluronic acid trial measuring hair loss.

The vitamins and minerals

The direct answer: the case report's table shows one Nutrafol label supplying several nutrients above 100% of the daily value, which is where stacking with a multivitamin can go wrong.

One Nutrafol label, as % of daily value (log scale)

Biotin10,000%
Selenium364%
Vitamin D313%
Zinc227%
Vitamin A167%
Iodine150%
Vitamin E23%
Figures from the table in the 2025 JAAD Case Reports article quoted above; bar lengths use a log scale, so 100% sits about a third of the way along. Read your own label: formulas differ.

According to the table in the 2025 case report, that Nutrafol label supplied biotin at 10,000% of the daily value, selenium at 364%, vitamin D at 313%, zinc at 227%, vitamin A at 167%, iodine at 150% and vitamin E at 23%. The report did not say which Nutrafol formula it examined, so read your own label rather than assuming these figures match your bottle. Three details stand out:

  • Biotin can make some blood tests read wrongly, and the FDA has warned that it can cause falsely low troponin results; see biotin: when it helps, and the lab-test warning.
  • Vitamin D from the capsule adds to anything else you take. The case report describes a woman whose level climbed well above the normal range because she did not know her hair supplement contained it.
  • Vitamin A and selenium can themselves cause hair loss when taken in large amounts, according to the American Academy of Dermatology, which is why more is not automatically better.

What the whole capsule has shown

The direct answer: the blend has been tested as a whole in small trials tied to the company, with positive results on investigator ratings and hair counts, and without an independent repeat.

The men's formula was tested in a six-month, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial published in 2025, which enrolled 112 men, saw 85 complete it, and was funded by Nutraceutical Wellness Inc., the company behind the brand. Significantly more men on the supplement than on placebo were rated as improved by blinded investigators. Our Nutrafol review, with every study and price lays out the full record and scores the men's capsule 5 out of 10 on our published rubric; our entry on whether Nutrafol works goes through each trial's design.

Questions to take to your doctor

The direct answer: bring the label, not the marketing page, and ask four things.

  1. Do any ingredients interact with my medicines? Nutrafol itself asks people taking medicines, especially anticoagulant and blood-thinning drugs, to consult a physician first.
  2. Am I already getting these nutrients elsewhere, from a multivitamin, a vitamin D pill or fortified food?
  3. Should I stop the biotin before my next blood test, and for how long?
  4. Is there a cause of my hair loss that needs testing or a prescription instead?

Nutrafol ingredient questions

Does Nutrafol contain biotin?
Yes. The label examined in a 2025 case report listed biotin at 10,000% of the daily value. Biotin can distort some lab tests, so tell whoever orders your blood work that you take it.
Does Nutrafol contain saw palmetto?
Yes, the men's formula names saw palmetto as a headline ingredient. The NIH's complementary-health centre says the evidence for saw palmetto in male-pattern hair loss is too limited to allow conclusions.
Does Nutrafol have iron?
The case report's table did not cover iron, and we did not find iron named on the men's product page. Check the label of the formula you are considering, and ask for a ferritin test if you think you may be low.
Is Nutrafol vegan?
The standard men's formula lists marine collagen peptides, which come from fish, so it is not. Nutrafol sells other formulas, so check the label of the specific product.
Does Nutrafol contain minoxidil or finasteride?
No. Nutrafol is a dietary supplement and describes itself as drug-free. Minoxidil and finasteride are medicines sold under their own labels.
